I spent my last afternoon having lunch at The Waddell, in Port Hopes Heritage Business District. This beautiful building is 165 years old, sits next to the Ganaraska River, and serves not only as a restaurant known as Trattoria Gusto but a hotel as well. Trattoria Gusto has a very unique look to it, Antiques, hard wood floors, large bowl lights, it’s really neat to just look around at everything. Trattoria Gusto also has a patio and on a gorgeous day you better get there early if you want a seat. I was told it was once a bank back in the day. I sit down in the restaurant and place my order. The cuisine in Trattoria Gusto is for a great conversation. My Caesar salad was edible, creamy, crisp romaine lettuce, with a slice of pancetta on the side. Our Beet salad was overpriced and hardly not worth it, with bits of grainy I will assume dirt from not washing the lettuce properly flowing through my teeth as I took a bite. Our steak salad was sent to the table RAW, we were not even asked how we would like the steak to be prepared, so that went back to be redone a tad more. The waitress told us that this is the way the chef prepares their steak salad. How nice, Maybe the chef should think about pleasing his clients first. Our Scallops were brought to the table RAW so I once again I sent them back to be redone. The pizza was the only proper thing edible at this meal. Thin crust, crispy edges, tasty, and it was really delightful to eat. Although the presentation of each dish was eye pleasing, the taste ( which is what Gusto means in Italian) was way off. The Waddell is a beautiful building to look at, and Trattoria Gusto would be a great place to bring a business associate. I would hate to have a business opportunity go arise, by the meal we were served. Looks like Trattoria Gusto….has lost it’s Gusto!
