I was meeting friends for brunch today, and did not want to bring the same old croissants, and donuts. Along 162 Highway # 8 in Stoney Creek Ont. I came across this quaint little bakery Picasso’s Bakery & Deli. This bakery knows the meaning of European desserts. I asked LJ The owner of this artistic place, to put an array of pastries together for me. Baklava! A light phyllo pastry, with layers of nuts and sweet syrup. Picasso’s also does a decadent chocolate coconut cake, it’s a light fluffy moist cake with sweet chocolate, and coconut & just a touch of cream filling, it has just the right amount of sweetness. Wafer cookies filled with sweet cream of chocolate and vanilla. What really took me by surprise was the Pesche Con Crema (Peaches with Cream) as we say in Italian. These little pastries are shaped and decorated to look like little peaches, then filled with whatever your pleasure is. Nutella, Vanilla Cream, Chocolate Ganache as kids we called them peach bums. It was a delightful treat for me. I ate six of those little yummy bums!. Picasso’s also does a traditional Burek it’s a phyllo pastry pie filled with your choice of sausage, cheese, or fruit. These pies are perfect for any dinner party or brunch with friends you must try one. They are perfect drizzled with seasoned Olive Oil or you can serve your fruit Burek with a dollop of Creme Fraiche. Lets talk about the freshly baked bread Pogacha. This european bread is done the old-fashioned way by poking with a fork small holes in the top of this bread then baked in the oven. This bread was so light and flavourful, and did NOT have that dense heaviness that some other breads have. You can also bake this Pogacha bread with dried herbs, potatoes, or cheese inside the possibilities are endless. Picasso’s also has a great deli and gourmet selection. I never asked LJ why she named the bakery Picasso’s but I assumed it was because of the art she creates with her Breads and Pastries.
