Sasso Pizza Market & Bar located in Hamilton Ont. is all about making pizza right, a stone baked oven with so much heat it can cook a full sized pizza in 90 seconds. Sasso has a very modern look inside, but Sasso also has a warm-hearted kitchen & welcoming staff that is well informed on all products being prepared. Chef Mark Farrugia owner of Sasso has a sense for bringing his Italian roots to Hamilton Ont. with his menu of Naples inspired cuisine, using all fresh local ingredients. I could not wait to try some of Sasso’s Belly Teasers. What a creative way to describe soups & salads. The Rocket which consisted of Arugula shaved Parmigiano and egg yolk in a fresh lemon vinaigrette was spicy and peppery, but very refreshing. I’m a bit of a salad lover. I love salads, but what came next brought me back to very old school ways. For my fellow Italians out there, were you ever told by your grandparents to come and pick dandelions? For those who did, you understand, for those of you who do not, let me sum it up for you. Way back in the day Italians used to pick dandelions and make a salad from the leaves off the stems, they would pick the leaves and drizzle olive oil, salt and vinegar on top and Brava! The dandelion salad was born. Way back when it was simpler times and a meal. It’s funny because when friends would come for supper at my home when I was younger, I would say “guys want some dandelion salad” and they would all look at me like I was crazy. “Your Eating Weeds” well guys, Chef Mark Farrugia brought back my childhood memory. Now just so we are clear I never did try the dandelion salad as a kid ( peer pressure it gets every kid) but I am sorry I did not. If the dandelion salad tasted the way Sasso made it, I would of have promoted it much more. The name itself  Weed Eh! dandelion greens dressed with a prosciutto, rhubarb vinaigrette and puffed quinoa with goat cheese was marvelous all the flavors of  bitter, tart, sweet, tangy, and creamy all coming together lifting my tastebuds to that level of excitement. Mom, Dad, Na Na, No No sorry for not believing. So let’s get to the heart of Sasso, the Stone oven that the Pizza is made from. Speaking with Pizza maker Nate he knows pizza, He stands next to the Stone Pizza Maker of Sasso like a fine solider ready to go to war. Like a fine oiled machine, Nate has pizza making down to a science. The order comes in and the fresh homemade pizza dough gets massaged into a masterpiece, doesn’t matter what topping you order it’s coming out overflowing with fresh ingredients & pure love. My Mona Lisa pizza was just like the painting, perfection but with every bite I took, my smile was cheek to cheek. Each bite of gooey mozzarella, sweet basil, and homemade sauce. The Mona Lisa was painting its own picture of flavour with each delectable bite I took. Sasso uses pure local ingredients and they are always changing the menu as each season comes into play. This gives Sasso the opportunity to come up with different cuisines for you to try. Don’t forget to pair your meal up some fine wines that Sasso offers as well. I treated myself to a drink called Sofia ( I was thinking  Sofia Loren) Gin, St.Germain Elderflower Liqueur mixed with  peach-infused grappa and a scoop of fresh lemon sorbet. With my first sip of Sofia, she slaps you right across the face, but then as your sorbet melts Sofia get sweeter, and a little softer and then you start to enjoy Sofia. With all the excitement happening around Sasso you can immediately tell this place is great for dinner parties, or just hanging out with some friends. The large televisions above the bar are great for any sporting event happening. I really enjoyed visiting Sasso Pizza Bar & Market. It’s Exciting, Deliciously Saucy, Fresh and Bursting with Flavor. What every Italian should be!
